The fascination by the rich cultural aspects of the Northeast Brazil inspired the Mandacaru collection. The jewels refer to the main elements of the Brazilian history and folklore, among iconic characters and the typical flora of the dry backwoods known as “sertão”.
“We would like very much to pay tribute to Brazil, especially at this moment when the country needs so much to recover its self-esteem. And I think that, to do so, we must dive deep in our own roots”, says the Creation Director of the brand, Stephanie Wenk.
From the contemplation of the woodcuts which illustrate the typical Brazilian pamphlet literature known as “cordel”, Stephanie tells that she has also made a trip through the Amsterdam Sauer’s history. “55 years ago, Jules Sauer, founder of the brand, had the certification, by the G.I.A. (Gemological Institute of America), of the first Brazilian emeralds, mined in the state of Bahia. In other words, the connection between Amsterdam Sauer and the region is huge. The pieces, all together, tell a poetical story about what I realize he saw in his so many expeditions.”
Main characters of the Northeast Brazil’s culture are represented in the collection by the Lampião earrings and the Bumba-Meu-Boi bracelet, symbolizing the well-known folkloric figure, mounted with a mix of sapphires, amethysts, garnets, and diamonds.
Representing the huge importance of the mandacaru cultivation for the economy of the rural dry areas of Northeast Brazil, we have the Mandacaru Flower pendant, adorned by rubellites and lengthened emeralds.
